When the fifth installment in Disney’s swashbuckling Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales, sputtered domestically in 2017, Disney decided the public had had enough of not only Captain Jack Sparrow, but of Johnny Depp as well. But with a total box-office haul of close to $800 million, thanks to overseas ticket sales, it was obvious the brand was still bankable.
A reboot has been bounced around for several years but nothing solid ever became of the idea. Now the Pirates reboot appears to be back on, with longtime franchise writer Terry Rossio back onboard the Black Pearl with Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin who’s critical accolades and two Emmys for his HBO miniseries.
Earlier this month sources reported Disney was eyeing Jumanji and Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillan to star in the reboot as a pirate named Red. The prospect of Depp being replaced by a woman has gotten many parrot feathers ruffled but at least the role of Jack Sparrow isn’t being recast.
More to come on these Pirates developments soon.
