IT Blends Spielbergian Elements with Horror

IT had a feeling of Stand By Me, The Goonies, and Stranger Things all wrapped into a horror movie.

IT is based of the Stephen King novel of the same name. This adaptation directed by Mama’s Andy Muschietti covers the child side of the novel. For those unfamiliar with the source material, IT tells the story of a terrifying monster who preys on children’s fears and kills them every every 27 years in the town of Derry, Maine. This film looks at  The Loser’s Club when they are kids how they dealt with Pennywise. Unlike the TV miniseries that came before it, this movie does not cover The Losers Club as adults.

There is a lot to love and appreciate about this movie. The direction, score, cinematography, writing, scares, and even comedy are so well woven into this movie that it makes this film all that more memorable. As an audience who saw the trailers we knew that the Losers Club and Pennywise were going to be what everyone talks about and it is. The kids in this movie are perfectly cast and they act how kids act no filter or anything, they say it how it is. Pennywise wow, Bill Skarsgard did not disappoint as the main villain of the story. He was all the things Pennywise is and more it never felt like a rip off of Tim Curry’s performance, but something new and unique that Skarsgard made into his own.

IT had a feeling of Stand By MeThe Goonies, and Stranger Things all wrapped into a horror movie where a bunch of misfit kids had to band together to defeat the monster. Singling out any of the kids’s performances would be a disservice as all members of the Losers Club were fun to be around and it is that chemistry of them coming together and fighting off their fears and Pennywise that make this movie what it is. Muschietti has done a great job adapting the first part of King’s epic novel onto the big screen, and I’m eagerly excited to see where the conclusion in the adult story ends up!
